Bears, Flutes, Morels, and Rapids - Hells Canyon Surprises!

Wonderful trip this mid-June to Hells Canyon Scenic Byway, an All American Road, and part of the Top 10 Drives. We made a whrilwind tour beginning in La Grande, Oregon, dining on wonderful morel mushrooms at Ten Depot Street, then off to the Eagel Cap Excursion Train in Elgin. We were treated with soft, comfy beds at Enterprise House B&B, and then listened to the lyrical tones of Roger McGee on his hand-crafted Native American flutes. We met Earl at Sunrise Iron and discovered there is a treasure of knowledge and artifacts that document early farming in the west. The canyon itself did not disappoint with a fabulous jetboat trip with Hells Canyon Adventures, where we spotted a total of three bears, and watch one for more than 15 minutes as it searched for salmon along the banks of the raging river. Truly amazing and full of surprises!
(Note: A small portion of Hells Canyon Scenic Byway is closed due to flood damage. Please check with local visitor info facilities before you travel from Joseph to Halfway on FS Road 39.)
