US Army Corps of Engineers, Libby Dam
Nestled in the mountains of Northwestern Montana lies one of the states best kept secrets. Libby Dam was built to provide flood protection for the Kootenai and lower Columbia Rivers, as well as to provide an additional source of hydroelectricity. Recreation is abundant in the region with ample boating, camping and hiking opportunities. The Kootenai River is a blue ribbon trout stream and the state record rainbow trout was caught right below the dam. Trout and kokanee are also found in abundance in Lake Koocanusa. One of the many unique features to Libby Dam is that it is a result of the Columbia River Treaty, and has a sculpture on one of the towers to celebrate the treaty between the US and Canada. Lake Koocanusa is 90 miles long running into Canada and can hold back 5.8 million acre-feet of water.
Libby Dam provides a delicate balance between flood protection, hydropower, recreation, and environmental stewardship. Visit the interactive exhibits in our Visitor Center, picnic, go camping or fishing. Tours of Libby Dam are available daily during summer months and by appointment year-round.
