Libby Dam
Libby Dam spans the Kootenai River seventeen miles upstream from Libby in the heart of beautiful northwestern Montana. The dam was constructed under an international treaty as part of a plan for the development of water resources on the Columbia River Basin. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began construction of Libby Dam in 1966, with the completion in 1972. Libby Dam is a multi-purpose dam responsible for flood control, hydropower generation, recreation, fish protection, and wildlife management.
Lake Koocanusa and the Kootenai River offer abundant recreational opportunities in both Canada and the United States. The reservoir has several private marinas and many public boat ramps. Fishing and water sports are popular year-round activities. The Kootenai River has a reputation of being a blue ribbon river for fishing. The eagle web camera is part of the Watchable Wildlife program at Libby Dam, with over 20,000 viewers from around the world annually. Libby Dam Visitor Center offers live views of the eagle camera and takes visitors an interactive journey highlighting the delicate balance of missions at Libby Dam. Free tours of the dam are offered daily during the summer and by appointment year-round. Libby Dam was recently listed as one of the top 10 tourist destinations in Montana.
