Old Chief Joseph's Gravesite & Memorial

This is the homeland of the Nez Perce people and the resting spot for Old Chief Joseph. In 1855 Old Chief Joseph signed a treaty with the US government, which allowed his people to retain much of their traditional lands. In 1863 another treaty reduced the amount of land significantly, but Old Joseph maintained the Nez Perce people never agreed this treaty. Young Chief Joseph took over his father's role, and in 1877 valiantly led his people to the edge of the Canadian border, in an attempt to escape the US government's soldiers. This was the final showdown resulting from the 1863 treaty. This five-acre memorial site marks the grave of Old Chief Joseph, which overlooks magnificent Wallowa Lake.
