Winter Recreation along Hells Canyon Scenic Byway

Winter recreation abounds along Oregon's Hells Canyon National Scenic Byway. While the entire 218-mile route is not open to vehicles such as cars and RV's in the winter months, there are still plenty of ways to experience the byway in the winter. Snowmobiling is a favorite activity, both out of Halfway and Joseph. The Salt Creek Summit site, USFS, offers a great jumping off point for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobilers. The annual Eagle Cap Sled Dog Race, an Iditarod qualifier, is always fun to watch. Downhill skiing is available at Ferguson Ridge, near Joseph, or at nearby Anthony Lakes Ski Area between Baker City and La Grande.
