City of Choteau
Known for its proximity to the Rocky Mountain Front, Choteau is located at the junction of U.S. Highway 89 and 287 -- 24 miles northwest of Augusta, 52 miles southeast of Great Falls, and an hour from Glacier National Park. Built around the stately, sandstone Teton County Courthouse, Choteau has restaurants and motels for folks who want to stay for a meal or for a week. Here you’ll find the starting points for many outstanding outdoor recreational opportunities in the Lewis and Clark National Forest and the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Along the Front, you can visit wildlife-viewing sites that may give you a glimpse of grizzly bears, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, elk, or white tail and mule deer. Explore the Old Trail Museum for a fascinating look at fossils, unique exhibits, dinosaurs, Indian artifacts, and western history. The museum reflects the rich cultural and natural history of the Rocky Mountain Front area, where you’ll learn about the vast inland sea that covered this locale 80 million years ago. Twelve miles west of town, the world-famous Museum of the Rockies’ Egg Mountain is a testament to the historical record where dinosaur egg shell fragments, nests, and babies were discovered for the first time in North America.
