Beartooth All-American Road

Witness the rare transition of lush forest ecosystem to alpine tundra in just a few miles on the highest elevation road in the Northern Rockies, and access the northeast entrance to Yellowstone National Park. Nez Perce leaders including Chief Joseph lead their people through southwestern Montana, Yellowstone Park and in early September of 1877, through the mountains of the Beartooths. In pursuit of the Nez Perce a US army regiment lead by General O. O. Howard passed through Cooke City and down the Clarks Fork Valley in an attempt to halt the band progress toward sanctuary in Canada.
