Eagle Cap Excursion Train
See Hells Canyon Scenic Byway country from the fun and comfort of a train! Travel along a 26-mile roadless section of railroad, beside the beautiful Grande Ronde and Wallowa Rivers. These dramatic rivers drain the remote Walllowa and Blue mountains of northeast Oregon. Board the train at the byway community of Elgin for an amazing train ride into some of the byway's most beautiful and rugged scenery. Enjoy a delicious lunch, featuring locally grown products. Learn about the history of the railroad and the geology and heritage of the region. Most trips are a relaxing 3.5 hours long and take place every Saturday from late May through October. Additional event rides include a dinner train, Mother's Day Brunch, and Fall Foliage viewing. Special River to Rail trips in mid-summer depart from Minam and pick up rafters at Rondowa. In February and March, ride the Steelhead Spectacular, aka the Fish Train, to access eight miles of roadless fishing holes along the Wild & Scenic Wallowa River. Check the Web site for trip descriptions and the 2010 schedule and for links to the rafting and steelhead fishing outfitters.
