Stanley Museum
The Stanley Museum—at one time a ranger station—is owned by the Sawtooth NRA and operated by the Sawtooth Interpretive and Historical Association. The museum features artifacts and photographs of historical significance to the settling of the Sawtooth Valley and Stanley Basin. Items for sale include guidebooks on birds, wildflowers, fish, geology, and trails -- as well as hiking maps, U.S. Geological Survey topographic maps, postcards, local cookbooks, coloring books, local history books, and videotapes. When the Challis National Forest was established in 1908, this site became its administrative center. An early log ranger station stood here from 1909 to 1934. Expanding USFS responsibilities led to the construction of the larger Valley Creek Ranger Station. When a new ranger station four miles south replaced this one in 1971, this site became a museum. The Valley Creek Ranger Station is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
