Sunbeam Hot Springs & Sunbeam Dam Interpretive Site

A pullout on the river side of SH-75 leads to a stone stairway and bathhouse built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1937. The recently rehabilitated bathhouse once contained pools and tubs. The site provides excellent views of the Salmon River and surrounding mountains. Interpretive signs tell the story of the hot springs. A trail leads to the hot springs flowing into the Salmon River. Sunbeam Dam was built in 1909-1911 to generate power for mining at the Golden Sunbeam Mine and Mill on Jordan Creek. The dam was located downriver from Sunbeam Hot Springs in the hope that the water would not freeze in the winter. This proved to be of limited usefulness and also obstructed salmon in their return to spawn. The only dam ever built on the Salmon River, it was partially dynamited in 1934 to help support
anadromous fishing.
