As as place for individuals and families to enjoy the outdoors, the National Forests in the Northern Rockies offer hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, skiing, kayaking, and countless other adventures. These very special areas protected from development offer the ability to escape the crowds of the city and encounter nature at its best. Follow the route of the Lewis and Clark Expedition through the Bitterroot Mountains, catch your limit of trout at a pristine alpine lake, or camp under the stars and listen to the howl of the wolf. Whether you're looking for the rigors of a wilderness trek or an easy drive along one of the Top 10 scenic byways, you'll find it here in the National Forests of the Northern Rockies. There are national forests located throughout the Northern Rockies states of Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming. For more information about the national forests along your travel route, visit www.fs.fed.us .
Most activities are free, but some require a pass or permit. Please refer to the Recreation Passes and Permits (http://www.fs.fed.us/passespermits/rec-fee.shtml ) to help you understand where fees and passes exist and the variety of pass options available to you. Interagency Recreation Passes can now be purchased at most National Forest office locations.
