Entering the United States
Individuals entering US by Land or Sea Travel: U.S. citizens entering the United States by land or sea are required to present a valid WHTI-compliant document, which include:
- Passports
- U.S. Passport Cards
- Enhanced Driver's Licenses
- Trusted Traveler Cards (NEXUS, SENTRI, or FAST)
- Military Identification Cards (for members of the U.S. armed forces on official orders)
- U.S. Merchant Mariner Document (for U.S. citizens on official maritime business)
Military personnel traveling under orders may present photo ID and orders. Family members must present a passport (with the exception of children 15 and younger arriving by land or sea.)
Children: U.S. children ages 15 and under arriving by land or sea from a contiguous territory may present an original or copy of his or her birth certificate (issued by the Vital Records Department in the state where he or she was born), a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or a Naturalization Certificate. If the child is a newborn and the actual birth certificate has not arrived from the Vital Records Department, we will accept a Hospital issued birth certificate.

Minors traveling with people who are not their parents: (applies for Canada & US entries): Must have written authorization from parents along with phone numbers and ID such as notarized copy of birth certificate. As of June 1, 2009 US & Canadian citizens under the age of 16 need only present a birth certificate, Canadian Citizenship Card, or a naturalization certificate. Birth certificates can be an original, photocopy, or certified copy.
Traveling with pets: Dog & Cat owners may generally travel with healthy pets with current rabies vaccination certificate within the past 36 months.
A note about U.S. Passports and Passport Cards: The U.S. Department of State (DOS) issues passports – sometimes referred to as ‘traditional passport’ or ‘passport book’ - and passport cards. The passport card can be used at U.S. land and sea ports-of-entry when arriving from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda. The card may not be used to travel by air.
The passport card has the same validity period as a passport book: 10 years for an adult, five for children 15 and younger. For adults who already have a passport book, they may apply for the card as a passport renewal and pay only $20. First-time applicants will pay $45 for adult cards and $35 for children.
To facilitate the frequent travel of U.S. citizens living in border communities and to meet the Department of Homeland Security's operational needs at land borders, the passport card will contain a vicinity-read radio frequency identification (RFID) chip. This chip will link the card to a stored record in secure government databases. There will be no personal information written to the RFID chip itself.
